BigCommerce gives your store a strong SEO starting point: editable URLs, built-in metadata controls, and a fast global CDN. But defaults don't rank on their own. Our BigCommerce SEO services configure and fix what's already there, so more of your catalog pages rank for the searches that matter.
What’s included
BigCommerce ships with better SEO defaults than most hosted platforms: editable titles and metas, customizable product URLs, an auto-generated XML sitemap, and robots.txt control. That head start is real, but it’s a foundation, not a strategy. Here are the 8 gaps our BigCommerce SEO closes on every engagement:

BigCommerce gives you editable titles, metas, and URLs, plus an automatic XML sitemap. 'Editable' isn't 'optimized'; most stores ship with auto-generated or duplicated metadata across hundreds of pages. We audit what's in place and rewrite it against a keyword map.
BigCommerce tacks the category path onto product URLs, so one product can surface under several different category URLs, faceted filters and pagination multiply the variants further. We set one canonical product URL per item, verify canonical tags resolve consistently (no chains or loops), and keep categories shallow so authority doesn't split.
Product images run through Akamai's CDN, which resizes and optimizes on the fly. It can't write alt text or fix a 5MB upload straight from a camera. We set alt-text and file-naming standards, confirm the image manager is active, and enable lazy-loading.
Faceted search helps shoppers and hurts indexation: every filter combination can spawn a URL with near-identical content. We audit which faceted URLs Google has indexed, tighten canonicals on filtered pages, and use robots rules to keep crawl budget on the pages that can rank.
Stencil (Handlebars) themes collect apps and scripts that drag down Largest Contentful Paint and Interaction to Next Paint. We profile real performance, remove or defer render-blocking scripts, strip unused app code, and tune image delivery.
BigCommerce includes basic structured data, but most stores need more for rich-result eligibility: full Product markup with offers and availability, AggregateRating where reviews exist, and BreadcrumbList. We add JSON-LD through theme files or Script Manager and validate it in Google's Rich Results Test.
BigCommerce's redirect manager matters most during replatforming, moving from Shopify, Magento, or WooCommerce changes nearly every URL. We build a complete old-to-new URL map, implement the 301s before launch, and monitor afterward so discontinued products and renamed categories never become dead ends.
Multi-storefront runs several storefronts, by region or brand, from one backend. Each still needs its own SEO: correct hreflang, localized content instead of machine-translated duplicates, and per-market keyword targeting. We set it up so storefronts rank in their own markets without cannibalizing each other.
How we work
No secret formulas, just a disciplined workflow built around how BigCommerce actually works: the platform handles some SEO natively and fights you on the rest, so the order of operations matters. We start by mapping what the theme, URL structure, and built-in settings already give us, then close the gaps BigCommerce leaves open, faceted navigation bloat, thin category pages, template-level issues. Each phase builds on the last, so nothing gets fixed twice. Here is the sequence:

We crawl your store the way Google does: indexation, canonicals, faceted URL bloat, redirect chains, schema gaps, Core Web Vitals. The audit covers admin settings and Stencil theme code. You get a prioritized findings report in plain language.
We research search demand around your products and map one primary keyword to each category and product page, a keyword-to-URL map for the catalog. That decides what each page should rank for before we touch a title tag, and stops your pages competing with each other.
Titles, metas, headings, and alt text get rewritten against the keyword map, directly in your BigCommerce admin. We fix thin category descriptions, strengthen product copy, and add the missing schema. Every change is documented, page by page.
We resolve canonical conflicts, control faceted crawl waste, put the 301 map live, and fix theme performance issues. It's unglamorous work, and on BigCommerce it often produces the biggest gains, removing the obstacles Google was tripping over.
With the store technically sound, we build off-page signals: outreach-based link building, guest posts, digital PR from real sites in your niche. Reports show the work completed, movement in Search Console, and what's next.
